Curves In Design

There’s no doubt that curves are having more than just a ‘moment’ across architecture and interior design. Scroll through any design lover’s Instagram account, and you’ll see arched windows, rounded sofas and gently curved walls waving back at you—especially in many of our Icon Homes builds.

Highlighted in Pinterest’s trend prediction report for 2022, this bonafide trend is the love child of modern minimalism, 1920s Art Deco and 70s, resulting in soft organic shapes balanced by sleek modern lines and angles.

Thanks to the long-lasting effects of COVID-19 and the ever-expanding role of our homes (house, office, study hall, playgroup, workout space), our need for warm, comfortable and functional surroundings has given curves their moment of glory.

Whether it be curved sofas in the living room, or striking archways in building facades, this trend for gentle, organic shapes hail an exciting new era for architects, designers and homeowners alike.

Building façade

Whether through archways, windows or walls, adding curves to a building façade is an instant recipe for a bold, contemporary look. Our much-loved Lennox 46 MKI beautifully showcases the striking impact curves can have on the façade of a building, with arched windows and a delightfully unexpected curved garage door.

Balancing curves with sleek lines and solid angles is key to keeping this trend in the 21st century and firmly away from 70s chunky funk. Getting creative with this concept, the curved masonry of The Iluka 46 balances the solid lines of the first storey, while the curved façade of The Killarney 49 counteracts the strong angles of the steel framed windows.

A perfectly-placed curved wall is also an elegant way to bring focus to select areas of the building façade. Check out the gentle curve of The Dalkeith 47’s exterior wall, drawing the eye to the front door and welcoming guests before they’ve even set foot inside.

Interiors

The design and aesthetic of our hardworking kitchens and bathrooms have really come to the forefront in recent years, and we’re seeing them take a delightful turn as they embrace the curve trend.

A quick and effective design feature, a softly curved kitchen island bench creates warmth and softness in one of the busiest rooms of the house. Pair this with organic materials, and your kitchen instantly becomes a soothing retreat for even the most frazzled home chef.

With organic shapes taking the place of hard edges, adding curvature to a bathroom design goes a long way to create softness in a room usually dominated by hard surfaces and sharp edges.

Consider an unexpected curved shower or the embrace of a stand-alone bathtub to bring this trend to the forefront in your bathroom. Or, if you’re not ready to commit to the trend quite that much, watch in awe at the impact of a simple rounded mirror or elegantly curved tapware.

Our friends at Reece have endless options for bringing your bathroom to the curvy side of life.

Furniture defines our living spaces, and with designers embracing freeform shapes and organic designs, we’re spoilt for choice regarding curvy furniture.

Rounded furniture envelopes you like a hug, so create a warm and whimsical living room environment with a ro

unded sofa or circular ottoman, or embrace these fluid lines with a sculptural lamp. In the bedroom, a curved headboard or rounded bedside table will help make the cosiest room in the house even cosier.

Soothing, warm and whimsical, curved architecture and furnishings are here to stay. Talk to a team member about how you can incorporate this delightful and contemporary look into your new home.
