Why You Need A Guest Room In Your New Home

If you’re in the process of designing your new home, or perhaps you’re just brainstorming what your new home looks like, then a guest suite is something to add to the list. With just a few tweaks, design updates, and finishing touches, you’ll be able to welcome family and friends to stay in your home with all the comforts of a luxury hotel.

Along with providing your guests with a private and comfortable space to stay, a guest room also comes with added benefits:

  • It will increase the value of your home: should you decide to sell your house, later on, having an additional bedroom or guest room will help increase your property’s value.
  • You can use it as a multipurpose space: office space, children’s playroom,
  • You are “future-proofing” your home: with more and more Australians shifting to “multi-generational living,” having a guest room will ensure that beloved friends and family members have a place to stay should they need it.

To help you create the perfect guest room for visiting friends and family, here are some pro tips from the Icon Homes team to help make a room that feels like a luxury hotel.

How to create the perfect guest room

1. Put some space between your room and the guest room

When designing your home, the best place to plan for a guest room is somewhere separate from other bedrooms. A guest room should be a peaceful oasis for visitors and family members. Situating the space in a quieter corner of the home gives your guests the chance to have some privacy and peace.

For a single-storey home, we suggest planning your guest room to be away from other bedrooms. If your home is double-storey, a downstairs guest room away from the high-traffic rooms is the perfect location.

2. Plan a guest room ensuite

Build an ensuite or full bathroom next to the guest room for maximum comfort for your guests. Not only does a guest-dedicated bathroom offer your guests a little privacy, but it also gives them a space to freshen up when needed.

Here at Icon Homes, we are all about convenience and comfort, and a spare bathroom can be a lifesaver. Everything from a small powder room to a full bathroom with a luxury bathtub can make all the difference in your home and lifestyle. As a bonus, your guests’ ensuite can be used as a spare bathroom by your family when you have no guests staying.

3. Create space for clothing and luggage

The first step in making your guest room exactly like a luxury hotel is to create space for your guests to put their luggage and hang their clothes. Even small carry-on luggage cases and shoulder bags can get underfoot, so a dedicated baggage drop space will help declutter the room.

A wardrobe, closet, or even a small chest of drawers can offer a great storage solution for guests. Inside the wardrobe, put a collection of hangers for guests to hang coats. If space permits, you can put a chair in the corner of the room or an ottoman at the end of the bed for guests to put their things on.

4. Stock the room with essentials

If you have a bedside table or an ensuite for the guest bedroom, stock it with all the essentials, plus a little extra, to make them feel completely welcome.

Items such as a jug of water or glass, some reading material, a phone charger or adapter, and a scented candle will help make your guests’ stay even more comfortable. You can also include a little notebook with instructions and helpful tips about your home, including your Wifi password, how to use the shower or hot water, and where they can find towels and other essential items.

5. A cosy, comfortable bed

There’s nothing more inviting than a big, comfortable bed. When designing your guest bedroom, you don’t need to splurge on the most expensive mattress on the market (although you can if you want to). Instead, you only need a simple, comfortable bed paired with high-quality sheets and pillows.

Thermoregulating your guest suite can be made simple with a few design features such as glazed windows, designing around the sun, and properly insulated walls. In the winter, you could include an electric blanket or an extra doona nearby to keep your guests warm. In the summer months, change the bedding to lighter linen with a small fan or AC to make the room even more comfortable and cool.
